The "Madness" format is a competition between historical figures that have something in common that takes place over the course of a week in Mr. Freccia's class. Although the commonality between the historical figures has changed overtime, the concept has not. Here is a history of the previous six tournaments:
Madness I
Course: World History (Glasgow High School, 11th grade)
Month of competition: March 2002 (student presented oral project, followed by class vote)
Commonality: Historical figures from the Reformation to Enlightenment (1500-1800)
Number of classes participating: 2 (both Honors sections)
Field of: 32
Final Four: I. Loyola (#6), HRE Charles V (#3), Russian Czar Peter I (#2), B. Franklin (#6)
Winner: Benjamin Franklin (#6)
Madness II
Course: American History (Newark High School, 9th grade)
Month of competition: March 2003 (student presented oral project, followed by class vote)
Commonality: American Presidents
Number of classes participating: 3 (1 College Prep section, 2 General sections)
Field of: 27
Final Four: JFK (#1), Clinton (#3), Lincoln (#1), FDR (#1)
Winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt (#1)
Madness III
Course: American History (Newark High School, 9th grade)
Month of competition: March 2004 (student presented oral project w/ campaign poster, followed by class vote)
Commonality: American Presidents
Number of classes participating: 3 (2 Honors sections, 1 College Prep section)

Commonality: World Figures from the first half of the year, 1400 to 1800. World Religion founders were also included, despite being outside of that time frame.

Madness VI
Course: AP European History (Newark High School, 11th grade)

Commonality: European Figures from 1450 to 2007.
